Getting there

Flight
There are dozens of flights to Lhasa every day from most major Chinese cities. Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai and Xining all have regular flights to Lhasa. Xining is one of the most important gateways to Lhasa and all the trains from China go through Xining to get to Lhasa. All of our Amdo tours and Kham tours also start here, so we can also arrange for your domestic Chinese flights for any major Chinese city to/from Lhasa. All of the tickets are E-tickets, therefore we only need your passport number to issue them.

Please remember to arrive at the airport about 2hrs before your flight as it takes time for passing through security, etc. You will also need the original Tibet Travel Permit to board the flight to Lhasa. Foreigners are not allowed to purchase airline tickets to Lhasa in China. You can only purchase airline tickets through a travel agency or book the flight ticket by yourself online outside of China. You do not need permits to purchase the airline ticket.

Note: we will need to know your hotel contact details (hotel address, telephone number, name of the person who booked the hotel and also hotel booking number). We will send the airline ticket to you hotel in Beijing or any other major city in China.

We can’t send the permit outside of China. However, it is safe for us to send it to your hotel in China. Delivery time takes 3-4 days,

Train: (Qinghai Tibet Railway)

Qinghai-Tibet railway is the world’s highest railway line. Every day there are thousands of travelers coming to Tibet Autonomous Region to experience the highest railway in the world. Along the way, travelers can see the unique scenery and mystery of the Tibetan Plateau. All of the trains to Lhasa are equipped for high altitude travel, with oxygen facilities that help the travelers adapt to the elevation.

You can take the Lhasa train from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Xi’an, Lanzhou and Xining. There are daily trains from Beijing, Xining, on add days, there is train from Shanghai and Chongqing, and there is train from Chengdu, Chongqing or Guangzhou have trains to Lhasa every 2 days.

It’s very hard to purchase train ticket in the peak season to Tibet Autonomous Region and at these times the price of train tickets can increase without warning. We will try our best to get the best prices for you.

Overland

There are three popular regions to visit in central Tibet; Utsang, Kham and Amdo. Overland to Lhasa is certainly possible and we can arrange overland tours to Lhasa from Chengdu, Yunnan, Xining and Kathmandu from Nepal side. These overland tours are full of adventures and are the best options to visit remote retreats and magnificent monasteries in the Kham and Amdo regions before arriving in Lhasa. The best time to take those overland tours is between May and the middle of October. The Kathmandu to Lhasa overland tour can be arranged year round.

First: Drive from Xining to Lhasa along the world’s longest and highest roadway, cross the snow capped mountains and one of the world’s largest Wild animal Natural Park s, Changthang. This rough route offers excellent picturesque scenery to those seeking beautiful scenery of plant life and wild creatures. This route may need to be avoided in the winter due to the chances of the road being blocked by heavy snowy.

Second: From Chengdu or Yunan to Lhasa overland tours have been quite popular in recent years. There are boundless grasslands and green jungles in the Kham region through this route. It’s a dream route for photographers. On this route you can visit the remote nomad plateau and the greatest glacier and alpine lakes of the Kham region before arriving in Lhasa.
Third: The most popular and spectacular overland route takes you on the Friendship Hwy between Kathmandu and Lhasa. If you enter Lhasa from Nepal side, you require a Chinese Group visa and your Chinese visa must be cancelled. We will help you to get a Chinese Group Visa in Kathmandu with your Tibet Entry permit. We will need 3-5 working days to obtain your Chinese Group Visa.
