The Muli to Yading Trek: Following in the Footsteps of Joseph Rock

This legendary trek was brought to world attention by Joseph Rock, the Austrian-American botanist and explorer. In 1928, he journeyed from the kingdom of Muli into the remote valley of Yading. Stunned by its beauty, he published his experiences and photographs in National Geographic magazine, famously dubbing the region's peaks as the most spectacular he had ever seen.

His writings planted the seed for Yading's modern reputation as "the Tibet Shangri-La Soul" and "the last piece of pure land on the blue planet." Today, trekking from Muli to Yading is a pilgrimage for adventurous travelers seeking to walk the historic path of discovery.

Trip Highlights:

Historic Route: Retrace the exact trail taken by Joseph Rock in 1928, from Muli to the sacred mountains.
Three Holy Mountains: Witness the stunning peaks central to Tibetan Buddhism:

Chenrezig (Xiannairi) - 6,032m (Representing Compassion)
Jampayang (Yangmaiyong) - 5,958m (Representing Wisdom)
Chenadorje (Xianuoduojie) - 5,958m (Representing Power)
Cultural Immersion: Visit traditional Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Muli and along the route, and experience authentic local culture.
Vast Landscapes: Traverse the expansive high-altitude grasslands of Litang and Tagong, dotted with yaks and nomadic tents.

Best Time to Trek:

The ideal windows for this trek are during the stable, dry seasons:

Primary Season: Late April to Early June

Spring brings blooming wildflowers, clear skies, and melting snow, offering dramatic views.
Secondary Season: September to November

Autumn offers crisp air, incredibly clear mountain views, and golden landscapes.

Periods to Avoid:

Rainy Season (Late June - August): Heavy monsoon rains make trails muddy, slippery, and prone to leeches. Dense fog and clouds often obscure the mountains.
Winter (December - Early April): Trails are covered in deep snow and ice, making trekking dangerous and often impossible. Many passes are closed, and services are unavailable.
Important Note: Weather in high-altitude Sichuan can be unpredictable. Even during the best seasons, trekkers must be prepared for sudden changes in temperature and conditions. Proper acclimatization, physical fitness, and a reputable guide/service are essential for this challenging and remote trek.
